Job Description

As support to the European Space Operations Centre we are looking for a Space Debris Operational Software Engineer

Activities

The threat posed by small, untracked space debris is significant, precisely because their exact number and dispersion are tough to quantify. Orbital data for large debris objects are compiled into catalogues widely available in the space community; these include the DISCOS (Database and Information System Characterising Objects in Space) database maintained by the Mission Analysis staff at ESA\'s Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt. You will be working on-site in the Space Debris Systems Domain, responsible for the following activities:

  • Administration and support of DISCOS users, management of access rights
  • Maintenance of DISCOS database in order to ensure the availability and accessibility
  • Upgrade, maintenance of the operational environment and migration of the DISCOS database
  • Maintenance and update of DISCOS user documentation and of the database administration manual
  • Issue of periodical reports, including annual or semi-annual log of ESA objects in space, ESA launches or GEO status
  • Support of the “Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee” (IADC) Events Database and the IACD Common Database
  • Detailed analysis in case of a high-risk conjunction event, maintenance of the CRASS Conjunction event prediction software and related processes/activities

Skills

You ideally have the following qualifications and experience:

  • University degree or equivalent in science or engineering
  • Expert knowledge in space debris environment and monitoring (observation, modelling, mitigation), orbital mechanics, orbit determination aspect
  • Knowledge and experience in database and software maintenance, SQL, Oracle 8i tools (e.g. Oracle Web Server), Oracle 10g on Linux, Apache, Tomcat
  • Basic understanding of the hardware (PCs, RAID, back up mechanisms...)
  • LaTex documentation software
  • Ideally knowledge of ESOC operational software like CRASS, ODIN, DISCOS, NRTDM
  • Knowledge of ECSS and CCSDS standards
  • Able to work independently and good communication skills
  • Fluency in English is mandatory, some knowledge of French or German an asset.
