Job Description

As support to the European Space Operations Centre we are looking for a Space Debris Application Software Engineer

Activities

The threat posed by small, untracked space debris is significant, precisely because their exact number and dispersion are tough to quantify. Orbital data for large debris objects are compiled into catalogues widely available in the space community; these include the DISCOS (Database and Information System Characterising Objects in Space) database maintained by the Mission Analysis staff at ESA\'s Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt. You will be working on-site in the Space Debris Systems Domain, responsible for the following activities:

  • Support to the implementation of an updated LASCO (batch process for ballistic parameter estimation and subsequent orbit prediction of all catalogued objects) for re-entry warnings in DISCOS
  • Maintenance of the LASCO and DELTA software and software documentation
  • Support to the implementation of an updated DRAMA version, organization of the production and distribution of DRAMA media (CD ROMs), update and maintenance of the DRAMA software and software documentation
  • Support the update of ESA’s Space Debris Mitigation Handbook
  • Installation of the SCARAB 3.1L software on the space debris servers: Maintenance of the turnkey SCARAB software system, operation of the software for test cases, modified operational cases and later new cases, retrieval of design information in support of SCARAB CAD input
  • Support (as back-up) to maintain core functions of the DISCOS database and of the IADC Re-entry Event Database and to conjunction event assessments (CRASS) and related orbit determinations (ODIN)

Skills

You ideally have the following qualifications and experience:

  • University degree or equivalent in science or engineering
  • Knowledge/experience in: Coordinate Systems; Orbital Mechanics; Space Debris Matters (Observation, modelling, mitigation); Orbit determination aspects; Software lifecycles, versioning systems and configuration management; SQL
  • Basic understanding of the hardware (PCs, RAID, back up mechanisms ...)
  • Knowledge of Application Software: DRAMA, MASTER, PROOF, DELTA
  • Knowledge of ECSS and CCSDS standards
  • Able to work independently and good communication skills
  • Fluency in English is mandatory, some knowledge of French or German an asset.

Starting date: 2011

An exciting international working environment in a highly innovative team awaits you.
