In support of ESA’s Technical and Quality Management Directorate (D/TEC) at ESTEC
we are looking for: Safety Engineer for Re-entry and Space Debris Applications

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate will report to the Re-Entry and Space Debris Safety Engineering Manager, within the Independent Safety Office (TEC-QI) in the Product Assurance & Safety Department.
  • The main activities of the Independent Safety Office (TEC-QI) in re-entry and space debris field are:
    • a) overseeing the implementation of the ESA policy, requirements and standards for re-entry safety and mitigation activities for space debris ;
    • b) supporting the development and maintenance of relevant policies, requirements and standards;
    • c) ensuring independent verification of compliance with regard to space debris requirements, and technical advice to ESA projects in the subject domain;
  • The detailed tasks are as follows:
    • Performing independent studies and relevant analysis in support of ESA projects in the application of re-entry and space debris mitigation strategies.
    • Assessment of re-entry debris casualty risk, design for debris demise, etc.
    • Performance of preparatory activities in support of re-entry safety reviews, and project reviews, as well as establishing and maintaining the relevant databases.
  • Contributing to R&D studies planning and execution in the field of:
    • Re-entry observation and data analysis / exploitation
    • Re-entry risk assessment (i.e.: ground, air and sea)
    • Mitigation strategies (e.g.: de-orbiting studies, etc)

Skills and Experience:

  • Degree in and Engineering discipline;
  • Familiarity with space debris and re-entry technical issues;
  • Knowledge of orbital mechanics, orbit determination aspects for re-entry evaluation studies, risk assessment techniques, etc.;
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Fluent in English; knowledge of another ESA Member State language is an asset.

Starting date: October 2011 or as soon as possible thereafter
